DSAI 2016 Project Exhibition provides an informal environment in which conference attendees may get in touch with research projects which stand out for their contribution to the state of the art and good practices.

Integrated System for Enhancing the Autonomy of the Blind

The project aims to build upon the advantages of the latest technological developments to create innovative solutions that can strongly contribute to the support and inclusion of people with special needs, specifically the blind community and all people suffering from visual impairment. The project focuses on the creation of a mobile digital platform that can contribute to an increase in the autonomy and range of action of the visually impaired, allowing inclusion in a broader set of activities and enhancing quality of life.
Visually impaired people face great challenges in their day-to-day lives that often require the regular help and support of others. Whether in an indoor environment going about daily activities, or an outdoor environment moving from one location to another, challenges faced can lead to a deep sense of isolation and dependency. Using computer vision techniques and enabling technologies, it is possible to integrate knowledge and knowhow from a variety of fields including Digital Media (information and platforms), mathematics (algorithms), Computer Science (hardware and software), and Engineering. Resulting integrated solutions include automatic text reading, recognition of barcodes and QR codes (eg., drugs or packaged foods), and the recognition of specific objects, enabling a significant increase in autonomy and allowing end users to better navigate both indoor and outdoor environments.
The project integrates the latest technologies and developments in the use of mobile devices, miniaturized cameras, and software. It is also designed with a non-invasive natural interface that is well suited to meet user needs, without requiring a change in habits and routines. CE4Blind is a digital platform of smart support designed to combat the digital info exclusion of visually impaired people, making them feel more integrated and productive in digital society.

Breaking Educational Barriers with Contextualised, Pervasive and Gameful Learning (BEACONING)

BEACONING sets a forefront in multifaceted education technologies through large-scale piloting of a digital learning platform that blend physical and digital spaces. As innovation action strategies, pilots combine opportunities for new ICTs in multiple ways that merge learning acquired in formal, non-formal and informal means, developing the skills for today’s abled and disabled learners and workforce. The BEACONING platform will be a ubiquitous solution that exploits advances in user experience design, mobile communication, location-based and context aware systems, procedural content generation, pedagogy-driven gamification, learning analytics and cloud technology though innovative integration towards a blended learning space. The BEACONING demonstrator will facilitate, assess and author gamified learning activities, integrating existing educational tools and services of the participating organisations. Focusing on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics), the cross-subject approach embedded in a Problem-Based Learning model will contextualise learning within real world problem solving and applications. The role of learners is amplified in the process of filtering and connecting concepts framed under practical, investigative and exploratory scenarios. Large-scale pilots will validate and inform the development of the BEACONING ecosystem that democratises learning across and among fully abled and those with mild to moderate physical and mental impairments (age 15 to 24), undergoing general and vocational training. BEACONING anticipates the benefits of making cross-subject matter more understandable, fostering the application of subject specialism to other domains. The pilot substantiates the technical and economic viability and the impact of the innovative platform to strategise market adoption and replication. By integrating experiences in a highly engaging, contextualized and personalised manner, learning can beyond the barriers of space and time.

Intelligent Parkinson eaRly detectiOn Guiding NOvel Supportive InterventionS (i- PROGNOSIS)

Transition from healthy status to Parkinson’s Disease (PD) is vaguely tractable, since symptoms can be so subtle in the early stages that they go unnoticed. Lack of biomarkers and/or findings on routine MRI and CT scans, PD is left undiagnosed for years, gradually affecting the life of over 6.5 million of older adults (>55-60 yrs) worldwide, increasing the risk of their health deterioration. Epidemiological studies conclude that early intervention could have an inverse relation with the PD-related risks of progressive frailty, falls and emotional shift towards depression.
Based on this evidence, the cardinal objective of i-PROGNOSIS is the development of (i) an ICT-based behavioural analysis approach for capturing, as early as possible, the PD symptoms appearance, and (ii) the application of ICT-based interventions countering identified risks. To achieve this, awareness initiatives will be employed, so as to construct i-PROGNOSIS community, targeting > 5000 older individuals within the duration of the project, in order to unobtrusively sense large scale behavioural data from its members, acquired from their natural use of mobile devices (smartphone/smartwatch). Ensuring anonymisation and secure Cloud archiving, i-PROGNOSIS will develop and employ advanced big data analytics and machine learning techniques, in a distributed and privacy aware fashion, so as to instantiate a PD Behavioural Model and construct reliable early PD symptoms detection alarms.
To those identified and clinically validated as early stage PD patients, ICT-based interventions will be provided via the i-PROGNOSIS Intervention Platform, including: a) a Personalised Game Suite (ExerGames, DietaryGames, EmoGames, Handwriting/VoiceGames) for physical/emotional support, b) targeted nocturnal intervention to increase relaxation/sleep quality and c) assistive interventions for voice enhancement and gait rhythm guidance. In this way, i-PROGNOSIS will constructively contribute to active and healthy ageing.

POLY-stakeholders for integrated CARE for chronic patients in acute phases (POLYCARE)
The Polycare project aims to develop and test an integrated care model supported by advanced ICT systems. These systems and services will allow patients in acute phases to be monitored from home. This methodology strives to achieve the two main objectives:
– Enhance quality of life and care for patients.
– Increase sustainability of health and social care systems.

Play for Children with Disabilities – LUDI
Play for Children with Disabilities (COST Action TD1309) is a network of more than 100 researchers from 31 countries working towards facilitating play for children with disabilities and ensuring their right to play is recognized.

Accessible metaphor for non-text Web browsing
The project aims at developing a universal solution for Web search interface by presenting a web search metaphor alternative to text. Specifically, it is presented an accessible and alternative interface to YouTube, contributing to give Web access to all users regardless of their degree of literacy.
Considering that text, the usual metaphor of accessing content on the Internet, limits the autonomous interaction to people with difficulties in reading and writing activities. A Web application with search functions by categories represented by icons, with audio help and based on the Youtube API, was developed. Specifically, users click on categories representative icons instead of entering a keyword in the search field, thus accessing all the videos shown on Youtube, in an alternative accessible interface.
This project was awarded with the “Digital Literacy and Inclusion 2015 Prize”, financed by the Portuguese Science and Technology Foundation
